Foiling Midwinters* at Upper Keys Sailing Club in Key Largo, FL will be the highlight of your winter, but only if you attend. Each event will include 6 days of foiling in steady breezes on the flat waters of Buttonwood Sound.

  • We get started with a practice/free-sail day. No fixed schedule and plenty of time to get your boat rigged and yourself settled before the event starts in earnest.
  • Day two we’ll be offering a full-day clinic to any interested UFO sailors. Clinic days are a new addition to Foiling Midwinters* after overwhelming customer requests in the Fleet Building and Event Planning Survey. By the way, you should fill the survey out, if you haven’t already.
  • Next we move into 3 days of racing. We’ll be running a new course in 2020 that allows for grand-prix finishes, which for all the non-motorsport enthusiasts means finishing a lap down. And don’t worry, the new course still includes the reaching starts we all love.
  • To cap it all off, we’ll be doing another clinic day where you can learn from the leaders of the fleet and cement all the lessons learned over the course of an amazing 6-day foiling vacation.

Still not convinced? Check out the action from last year.

  • UFO charters will be $600 for each event.
  • Clinic days will be $200/day, but if you haven’t used up your two free clinic days in Bristol, RI ($150/day value), we’ll credit you $150/day bringing the price down to just $50/day for a full-day clinic in Florida.
  • UFO charters for Midwinters #1 (January 15-20) are fully booked. If you missed out, be sure to fill out the surveys like the Fleet Building and Event Planning Survey when they get sent out. Customers who indicated interest in the Winter Circuit got first dibs on UFO charters at their preferred event.
  • If you’re trying to get your own UFO down to Foiling Midwinters* in the Keys, I’m happy to offer logistical support. Just send me an email.
  • Multiple hotels are available on Route 1 near Upper Keys Sailing Club. Additionally, tent camping is available for $40/night a couple hundred yards from the club. Email us for camping details and other local knowledge.

UFOs Cap Off Winter Series with Fort 2 Battery

CHARLESTON, South Carolina, Planet Earth (April 28, 2019) UFOs flew into Charleston this past weekend for three fun-filled days of foiling in the combined Fort 2 Battery and Foilmania events.

After a few pre-event practice days in warm 12-18 knot sea breezes, things really kicked up on Friday for the first day of Foilmania racing. Throughout the day foilers faced sustained winds in the mid-twenties with gusts into the thirties and a peak gust of 35 knots. Dave Clark and Nick Burroughs each won one race before the Race Committee called off racing for the day with winds continuing to build. With the drone on station for a third race some obligatory blast reaching had to be performed before all the boats safely returned to shore.

Day two featured much lighter winds for the Fort 2 Battery race. In order to allow the sea breeze to build Race Committee delayed the start to 3:55 pm. When the gun finally went local ace Otto Demuth shot out to an early lead in 8-12 knots of seabreeze. As the breeze built towards the end of the race Dave Clark finally managed to reel him in just before the finish line for the Fort 2 Battery win.

Day three featured extremely puffy conditions starting out about 10 knots and building up to around 16 knots by the last race. Navigating current, wind shifts and some brutal lulls proved to be very tricky, but Dave Clark handled it all in stride to take the overall win with Otto Demuth in second and Nick Burroughs in third.

The UFO Class would like to thank our wonderful hosts at James Island Yacht Club. Plus all the competitors in the BBQ Cookoff, who provided a huge spread of delicious BBQ for all racers after the Fort 2 Battery Race. We can’t wait to return for next years event with even more UFOs.

UFO Class Kicks Off Winter Circuit at Foiling Midwinters

KEY LARGO, Florida, Planet Earth (January 27, 2019) UFOs joined the International Moth Class at Upper Keys Sailing Club for Foiling Midwinters from January 25-27th, 2019.

After two practice days with 15 knots of breeze, the first day of the regatta kicked off in 6-9 knots with some lulls as low as 4 knots. All competitors got on the foils at times, but even the Moths would get stuck in the water in the worst lulls. The name of the game for the UFOs was finding a puff to get foiling in upwind and heading straight to the mark downwind in foil-assist mode. While some competitors did choose to foil downwind, they quickly discovered the extreme angles they had to sail in the lulls to stay foiling didn’t get them to the bottom mark first. Definitely a highly tactical game of snakes and ladders.

Days 2 and 3 the breeze picked up and full-course foiling became the key to victory. In the windier conditions David Clark and Nick Burroughs began to pull away from the rest of the fleet and a duel for first place began. After 12 hard fought races it came down to one point with David Clark beating out Nick Burroughs for first and Otto Demuth, winner in Race 1, foiling comfortably into third place.
